The Morris County Prosecutor's Office announced they are expanding the deployment of spike strips to municipal police departments across the county.

The tire deflation devices can be stored in patrol cars, and quickly positioned to cause the controlled deflation of tires of fleeing vehicles. Using hollow, steel spikes, the strips are designed to prevent blowouts and reduce the speed of target vehicle, authorities said.

Spike strips can help bring a police pursuit, which poses risks to criminals, officers and bystanders, to a safer end. The devices will be deployed within the Attorney General's Office guidelines, authorities said.

The 90  Stinger Spike System Model 90200 Trooper Tire Deflation Devices, produced by Federal Signal, cost of $52,007 and were paid for by Morris

County Prosecutor’s Office forfeiture funds, authorities said. The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, the Morris County Sheriff’s Office, and 13 municipal police departments have opted to receive the devices, authorities said.
